IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY …
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
There is a system in place to handle emergencies:
We have safety teams that practice exercises to be better prepared for an emergency situation.
When appropriate, you will be informed of an emergency in a timely manner.
In an emergency situation, teachers have been instructed in emergency response procedures as per their building plans.
Law enforcement and rescue personnel may be involved.
It is critical that, when contacted, parents follow the directions of emergencypersonnel. Until you receive further instructions, please remain in place so we may contact you when necessary.
The following may be used to provide information: Connect-Ed, District website, email, phone chains.
If you happen to be in the building, please follow the directions of the school and/or emergency personnel.
If you happen to be on school grounds during a school activity, remain with the group and follow the directions of the school and/or emergency personnel
Parents and students are not permitted to enter or leave the building until the situation has been resolved.
Law enforcement personnel will take over command once they arrive; school staff willcontinue to work with law enforcement and rescue personnel.
Please be assured that the Carle Place Union Free School District has prepared EmergencyResponse Plans for all of its school buildings. All personnel have been instructed inemergency procedures. If we all followestablished procedures, it will increase the likelihood that the situation will be resolved in a timely and safe manner.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Regularly update your emergency information (i.e. home, work and cell phone #s, child care provider, email address, etc.).
Regularly discuss emergency procedures with your child. Talk to your child about the importance of following teacher's instructions during emergencies. Reassure your child that if they follow directions, they will be okay.
It is important that you do not try to contact your child (or the school) via cell phone or other electronic device (depending on the situation) as these devices may precipitate an emergency.
Stay calm! Stay where you are! Wait forinformation! Keep your phone lines clear sowe may contact you as soon as possible.
Stay informed as to the emergency procedures for your child's school building. Be an informed and involved parent!
GLOSSARY
Chain of Command: The designated order of the
people in charge, ranked by the order of their
responsibility in an emergency
Incident Commander: The person in charge of the situation
Lockdown: School staff and students are secured in the rooms they are currently in and no one is allowed to leave until the situation has been curtailed.
Lockout: The process of securing the building sothat no staff member or student may leave the building and no one may enter the building.

The information contained in this brochure is a small part of what has been shared with staff members and has been adapted for parents/guardians of students in the Carle Place School District.
