Statement from David Flatley, Superintendent of Schools
Carle Place Union Free School District
Earlier today, the district was advised by Nassau County Police Department of the unfortunate shooting that took place near Roosevelt Field mall. In consultation with the police department, the district decided to close the middle school/high school campus to students during lunchtime. Further, elementary school students at both Cherry Lane and Rushmore Avenue were kept inside during recess. As of this afternoon, the police department notified us that they believe there is no imminent threat to local schools. As such, we are able to resume normal procedures and activities. As always, the safety and security of all studentsis our utmost priority.

Please be advised that Rivlab has continued to assure the district that they will be able to continue to meet their contractual obligation to transport Carle Place students to the high schools above. We recognize that due to the location of their offices in Arverne, they are experiencing some operational issues related to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The District has already begun the process of trying to secure transportation to these schools via an alternative bus company should Rivlab no longer be able to meet its contractual obligation. In the meantime, the district has reached out to each high school and apprised them of the situation. Each school has assured us that students are not marked late due to transportation issues. We will continue to monitor the transportation situation with Rivlab and will provide additional communication with effected students and parents accordingly.
Thank you for your patience.
